Most Rev. John Baptist Attakruh on Friday, January 21, 2022 ordained three young men as transitory deacons for the Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.
The ceremony which took place at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Airforce Base, Takoradi had in attendance parents, parishioners, and friends of the ordinadi together with Priests and Religious from the Diocese.
Delivering the homily, Bishop Attakruh urged the newly ordained deacons to serve in humility. He said, ” The act of arrogance shouldn’t be your life but serve with humility not arrogance”.
Bishop Attakruh called on the deacons to be grateful and prayerful. ” Cultivate daily the spirit of gratitude and learn to be prayerful”, he said.
The Prelate reminded the deacons that God has called them for a reason. He said, “God has called you not because of who you are but by His special Grace. You must therefore serve as deacons . The ministry is for Christ and not any individual or whatsoever “.
Bishop Attakruh was full of gratitude to the Parish Priest and the Parish Pastoral Council for willingly accepting to host the ordination ceremony at a short notice.
Bishop Attakruh also used the occasion to remind the faithful to pray for the victims of the Appiahtse explosion. He expressed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones to the inferno.
Rev. Fr. Flt. Lt. Jocab Ernest Kyei Quansah, the Parish Priest on behalf of the Parish thanked the Bishop for selecting the Catholic community as host for this year’s Diaconate Ordination. He said, ” We are grateful to the Bishop to choosing to have this ordination ceremony at our Parish. And in the year of the our Golden Jubilee as a Parish this makes it even more special for us”.
The three newly ordained deacons are:
Rev. Deacon ASARE, Sylvester (Agona Amenfi Parish)
Rev. Deacon BOB-KUMI, Augustine (Oppon-Valley Parish)
Rev. Deacon CROMWELL, Martin (Agona Nkwanta Parish).
Deacons, like priests and bishops, are members of the clergy. Liturgy, word, and service are three aspects of the deacon’s ministry. He supports the bishop and priests throughout the service. The deacon proclaims the Gospel, may be asked to preach the homily, and serves at the altar throughout the Mass. Among other things, the deacon may baptize, witness, and bless weddings, preside at the Liturgy of the Hours, and preside at funeral liturgies.
