Most Rev. Palmer Buckle calls on newly ordained priest to follow God unreservedly and selflessly

My sons, this is the message for you today and for the rest of your lives

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Reverend Charles Palmer-Buckle on 12th September called on 13 newly ordained priests to live up to the call of God selflessly and unreservedly during the ordination ceremony at St. Teresa’s Minor Seminary, Amisano. In his homily, he gave message of advice and encouragement to the newly ordained.

In his message he said: “My sons, this is the message for you today and for the rest of your lives:

  1. No one take this honor upon himself but only when called by God
  2. Not even Jesus Christ took this glory upon himself. No one deserves it. The holy priesthood is totally gratuitous and underserving. Do not forget that.
  3. Jesus Christ himself, son though he was, offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears. He learned obedience from what he offered. He was heard because of his reverence.
  4.  Like Elisha, the Lord Jesus Christ is calling you, his sons and follow him unreservedly, selflessly, leaving every security in life, even family ties and expectations if you are to be worthy of the Kingdom of God. What comes clear through this scripture passages is that to follow Christ in the priesthood, you must be ready to lead the evangelical councils like a Christ-like life of obedience. Life of poverty and life of total self-denial often referred to as chastity. It was not easy for Jesus himself, it will not be easy for you too. Nevertheless my sons have courage for all things works for those who love God and you are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

Again St Paul will encourage you that in all circumstances you give thanks to God for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus(1 Thessalonians 5:18). My sons these are also my exultations for you one and all.”

He also gave a word of advice to the parishioners who were present. He said, “Well to you my dear family and friends and parishioners please listen carefully to what the first reading tells us. Elisha was made to abandon all human securities and even his family, father and mother etc. I am very encouraged by your beautiful presence. May we be good examples by these young ones like Elijah was to Elisha. Let us be ready to even our cloaks and teach them to listen and look our to God alone not even to ourselves.
